By pretty much all accounts, this is a phenomenal time to be an automotive enthusiast. Automakers just keep rolling out new and exciting products. There are Dodges that come with 707 horsepower from the factory. There are electric cars that perform well enough to shake up the market, and there are currently somewhere in the region of half a dozen offerings that can hit 60 from a standstill in under 3 seconds.

Its not just high budget cars either. The hot hatch market has arguably never been more well represented, and even modern econoboxes can be pretty peppy. A few decades from now, I fully believe that we will look back on this point in time and say “They just don’t make them like they used to.”

While we may currently live in a generation of almost unparalleled automotive excellence, I can’t be the only one that will occasionally have an idea and say “why don’t carmakers make this?”

Now I’m sure there are very good reasons why automakers wouldn’t put my ideas into practice, chiefly among which is the fact that they would likely sell 3 of each car I’m about to list, but those 3 people would be damned proud to drive their rare car. I know I would be.

So without further ado, I present to you my list of cars that should exist but don’t

Ford Fusion SHO- The Fusion is a handsome car, and with the addition of the 3.5 EcoBoost motor out of the Taurus SHO, all wheel drive, and some light visual modifications and you could have one badass ride.

New Porsche 928- Take the Panamera, make the doors longer and take out some of the ugliness and Porsche could have a nice GT car to worry to Brits at various different price points depending on engine choices and if you want yellow seat belts.

Ram 1500 HellCat- Like the SRT-10 from a few years back except even cooler. I’d want mine with cloth seats and a third pedal.

Volkswagen CC R- The CC is one of the best looking cars in Volkwagens lineup, and now it just needs an actual R variant to match the “R-Line” package VW offers.

New Merkur XR4Ti- With the new 2.3 EcoBoost in the Mustang, now seems as good of time as ever for Ford to take another stab at a weirdly named, overpriced German car. If anything, how hard would it be to retrofit a bi-wing onto a new EcoBoost for me?

So there are my suggestions, what car do you think should be made that currently isn’t? Let me know in the comments.

3. Ram Hellcat. Given FCA’s path I wouldnt be shocked if we got one of those eventually.

But I still think Ford would benefit from a new Bronco. The issue with Ford’s “European” styling it does leave cars like the Escape looking a bit soft. A more aggressively styled SUV could work for Ford.

Affordable Budget Exotics. I’m not talking Mclaren sport lines, bring back Dino-type cars, exotics that could actually be had by mere peasants. But that’s asking too much.

Just give us stripper sports cars again. Stripped out Caymans and 911s that aren’t GTs would be nice. They’d appeal to a young market that could possibly afford them, and whatnot. An actual entry-level car that isn’t used.

If that’s too much, give us entry level V8 pony cars that don’t cost $30k....

I've always had an idea for a budget limited run car. Most of the time a limited run Porsche for example costs head and shoulders above the regular offerings, but what about doing like a base, stripped out Cayman with cloth seats and basic instruments for less money that a regular Cayman, but only make a few thousand of them. They'll certainly sellout very quickly, and the up-charges from the dealers and resale would probably be a bitch, but I always thought that would be cool!

A new Ford Capri.

Same idea as the the 1969. An inexpensive sports car for the people with a silhouette to die for, nice styling. The original was the Mustang’s little brother, so use the same idea here. Small light RWD platform, manual transmission, small engines.

Base engine could be the 1 Litre Ecoboost, and the top engine the 2.3 Ecoboost. Wouldn’t want it to be faster than the Mustang. God forbid.

It would need to be a two door lift back, since the old standard trunk like the MK I Capri wouldn’t fly.

It absolutely needs the classic swoopy rear quarter window. The silhouette is so cool.

Side note, when the Capri was in development it was actually code named ‘Colt’, but some tractor company in Asia had the copyright.

Came here to post Fusion RS/SHO (which I think would get the 2.7TT), or any other small/midsize AWD with an FI 6 or V8.

I don’t want a 4 cylinder, or a 3800 pound “compact”, so an S3 with S4 engine, a V6TT Fusion RS, an M235xi sedan, an AWD ATS-V, or a Legacy GT with turbo H6.

Also, every car in the Mazda lineup should get an Ecoboost engine:

1.6T Miata and 2.oT Mazdaspeed Miata (maybe a limited edition 2.3?).

1.6T, 2.0T, and 2.0T AWD for the 3, 3S, and MS3.

i think we know that the shorter wheelbase of a 1-series sized car will not allow it to have the dynamics of a 7 series, and a 4 banger or even 6 cylinder will never have the power delivery possible from an 8 or 12 cylinder engine, but i think i get your point.

where i think some of your issue comes from is in the interior fitments. the 1 and even the 3 series, and the CLA class, all seem quite (gasp) cheap, especially when compared to the supple leather and wood of the 7s and s classes. i understand that these plasticky/synthetic interiors are required to bring the price points down to a threshold that will acheive a certain sales volume, but the cars definitely lose the some of the luxury otherwise associated with the marques.

perhaps a (likely very expensive) full interior upgrade option would get you halfway to where you want to be. im sure you could piecemeal some of the options in the current build sheets, but having a complete interior upgrade as a single check box would be a nice alternative.

hopefully the engineers could figure out a way to mimic the drive-feel of the larger sedans in the smaller cars with fewer cylinders.

couple these two things together, put an “L” badge on it, and profit, errrrr, i mean, lose money. :) bmw actually sold an L6 and an L7 for a brief stint back in the 80s. this was basically an iterior/leather package, and only auto trans cars, but basically the same idea.

there is a problem with a panamera-based 928. let me go through the points.

panamera prices top out in the 150k to 200k range. this is also where the more common 911s top out. (i imagine a gt2 rs would be more.)

since the introduction of water cooling, the 911s have been becoming more and more luxurious, and less and less “sporty”

the 991, with its longer wheel base and wider track, allowing for a more roomy interior, continues to push the 911 out of “sports car” characteristics into GT land

if porsche were to manufacture a 2 door panamera, it would likely be able to be priced as a direct competitor to the 911, with the only added benefit being a potentially marginally larger rear seat. (the GT-like driving characteristics can arguably be claimed to already exist in the 911)

so, porsche could make the 2 door panamera, jack the price up into the 200+ range, and pretend its more of a car than a panamera or a 911. but i think the customers would be too smart to fall for this.

the only way i can imagine they could (somewhat) successfully manufacture and market a 928, is to start with a clean sheet exterior design, to separate the car a little from the panamera, couple it with drivetrain tech from the 918, and design a bentley/rolls royce-esque interior to make the car a truely luxurious flagship. then price the thing at 250-350k to compete with the F12/FF and vanquish.

That was just a suggestion to counter the argument a company like Porsche would make that a cheaper model would “taint the prestige of the brand” despite the companies history being littered with 924’s and 914’s and Beetles.

The more I think about it, the more I want a cloth seat, fully stripped, poverty-spec Cayman.

I want Personal Luxury Coupes back. I want what companies like Lincoln, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Buick, and other American car makers used to do. I want cars tuned for comfort, cars that are luxurious, cars with V8 engines, and I want them priced in a way that they’re not impossible to obtain. I’m sick of this whole thing of chasing after the Sports Sedan market, of trying to beat “ze Germans” at their own game, that every two door luxury car is only designed to go around a track, and every comfort oriented luxury car is priced out of the stratosphere.

I want cars like the Monte Carlo, the Thunderbird, the Mark series, the Cordoba, the Eldorado, and the Riviera back. I want cars that float over bumps and can be afforded with a decent paying job, not an uncomfortable “sporty” lease-mobile. I know that Luxury SUVs have taken over that niche, but even they’re too expensive, and they’re days seem more numbered by the second. I want the “lower, longer, wider” school of thought back, and I want it in a way that means even a guy like me might have a shot at one.

America’s already brought back the muscle car (high priced as they are), it's time we bring back the two door Personal Luxury car.

In my mind it wouldn’t have a I4 or 6 banger, it would have a V8 or upwards, the extra interior bits and air suspension and superior build quality and materials would make it very heavy. How fast does it have to be to be an “exotic”? You can’t have fast AND super nice/equipped AND cheap, so it’s a matter of choosing where to make sacrifices.

Corvette and Lotus give you two options for affordable-ish craziness, but if you’re talking cheaper than that, the STI, Focus RS, and 370Z are pretty solid all-around cars for reasonable new-car prices. If you want to go past that, the answer is convincing Mazda to re-partner with Ford and sell Ecoboost Miatas.

I think $100,000 is a very good price point for something along the lines of what he’s talking about. Think about it, a Ferrari designed small mid-engined sports car with a modified version of the V6 in the Ghibli possibly with a gated manual? Decently fast, prestige of the name without bringing down the ‘Prestige of the brand.’ Very much in the same breath as the Alfa 4C but for the people who want just a bit more. A $300,000 supercar is so far out of reach for most people that a majority of the population will never have a chance to own one. The sub $100k market however is certainly nothing to sneeze at, but isn’t as ridiculously impossible for people with a decent-paying job who work hard for their money and want to have a nice car to show for it and enjoy. The Alfa 4C really has that kind of budget exotic sector to itself right now, but I’d like to see more join it.

Not S3, but RS3. Yes the engine is still sideways, but 367hp and AWD in a 3300lb package? 450 lbs-ft with a tune? Probably enough to hold you over until you figure out how to get the RS7 drivetrain shoehorned in there.

Very solid option. Dart is a nice car, Dart HellKitten would be much better.

- Nissan Versa Note Nismo RS: Basically, a JDM Note Nismo S with a base model Juke engine (same displacement as a US spec Versa Note, so it shouldn’t be that hard to stick it under the hood), making it an excellent Fiesta RS competitor.

- Chevrolet Cruze SS: This would apply to the new 2016 Cruze, of course. Take the 2.0 turbo out of the ATS, attach it to a manual transmission or dual-clutch automatic and AWD drivetrain, and stick it all inside the Cruze, with a sporty interior and a more unsuspecting exterior that looks mostly like a normal Cruze.

Maybe base it cosmetically on the Premier trim model so it’ll be well equipped, too.

- Ford F-150 Lightning: Basically, like the new Raptor, but track and strip oriented instead of off-road oriented.

Same EcoBoost engine, so there’s nothing to change, powertrain-wise, just give it a fully independent suspension, or at least indepentant suspension up front.

- Kia Forte Koup SX-S: Basically a Forte Koup with the Veloster Turbo’s engine, manual transmission, fully independent and sport tuned suspension, and upgraded interior.

agree - Mazda really needs to turbo their 2.0 motor. It would work in the Miata, a new Speed3, maybe a hotted up version of the cx5, cx3 or even a Speed6. Cut the failed diesel investment and give me some boost.

1) Base models with beige cloth interiors. Like every Subaru from the late 90’s / early 00’s. Black interiors look fucking awful and claustrophobic. Tan interiors look bright and airy and way more luxurious (even if it is still cloth)

2) Turbo BRZ. For fuck’s sake, Subaru ALREADY makes a turbocharged version of the FA-20 engine, but inexplicably only installs it in an economy sedan (WRX) and a crossover (Forester XT).

3) Mini pickup. The Ranger was awesome because it was the size of a normal sedan. I’m guessing the inward-facing jumpseats don’t pass safety regulations, but they were an awesome way to combine usable rear seats with a super short extended cab.

4) WRX (STI) hatchback. Subaru claims they can’t afford to make a hatchback, which is complete bullshit. If they could afford to make a hatchback back in 2001 when they were a little footnote of a company, then they sure as hell can afford to make one now that they’re a big player.

5) Street legal track day cars. Why do cars need to pass safety standards? Motorcycles don’t have to pass shit. Who the fuck are you to tell me I can’t buy an Ariel Atom? At least I won’t fall off it if I get rear ended.

6) Ecoboost Mustang. No, not the 2.3 EB. The 2.7 V6 and 3.0 V6 (from the upcomming Lincoln Continental). The V8 is great and all, but the V6’s can easily make more power.

7) Mini Rocketman. Surely BMW’s carbon fiber crusade has made it possible to make a tiny Rocketman that passes safety regulations (also, see point 5: fuck safety regulations).

8) An open gate manual Ferrari. Call it a Dino if you have to, but I want a Ferrari that is more about the experience than the lap times.

Well FCA will make a compact RWD roadster. But it will be from an Italian company and based on a Japanese car. But it will look great and have more power available than the Japanese counterpart.

Modern day Datsun 510. Small light rwd. Comes in either 2 or 4 door flavors. No thrills no frills stripper car with a base price of around 12k. With options and trim levels going up from there.

Also large 2 door cars. I’m a big man and I’d like a 2 door car, I can fit comfortably in. And not a sports or muscle car. A nice comfy car with good power and a smooth ride.

Oh I thought he was talking “budget” like 25-35-45k area, especially with the talk of stripped 911s and Caymans. I think once you hit the 100k area, it’s a small population and most want “nice” more than “fast”. The 100k hardcore enthusiast market must be tiny...

I’d probably just make it a Ford Fusion ST, keep in line with the more recent family lineage. Not that I don’t have love for the SHO, definitely do, but ST would make more sense right now. I own a 2014 SE with the EcoBoost, great car.
